The best month of the year is sadly over. Congratulations to UCONN Men's Basketball Team and South Carolina's Women's Basketball Team. On the bright side, there are less than 365 days until the next NCAA Basketball Tournament.

With the basketball season coming to an end, there's been an increase in players entering the transfer portal. Some athletes are very candid about what it would take to transfer such as millions of dollars in NIL deals. NIL isn't only impacting the athletes. It's also impacting coaches and where they move to. 

Transfer Portal Frenzy

There are over 900 Men's College Basketball players in the transfer portal which is over 20% of the D1 scholarship men's basketball players. Athletes consider several things when transferring like playing time, coaching staff, facilities, and now NIL.

A recent Bleacher Report article exposed some of the requests transfers are making. One unnamed men's basketball transfer is looking for 1.5 million dollars of NIL commitments. We don't know the identity of the transfer but do know he is yet to enter the portal. Who could it be?

Who would provide the $1.5 million of NIL commitments? The funds would most likely come from a collective. Throughout the March Madness tournament, several collectives used the popularity of the tournament and success of their teams to raise funds. Read more about collective fundraising endeavors here.

Coaching Transfer Frenzy

NIL isn't only impacting athletes. It's also playing a role in the movement of college basketball coaches. Coach John Calipari left his head coaching role at Kentucky for a new opportunity at Arkansas. Kentucky was one of the last SEC schools to get an NIL collective and lacked overall involvement in the NIL space. In his new role at Arkansas, Coach Calipari will allegedly receive $5 million yearly for NIL endeavors and is thought to be meeting with the Tyson family (of Tyson Foods) and Walton Family (of Walmart) to further discuss NIL funding. While NIL is not the sole reason Coach Cal left Kentucky, it most likely played a part in his decision.
